Product listings are an important part of ecommerce. They are the first impression Retailers get of your business, so it’s important to craft product listings that are clear, compelling and consistent. Product listings also need to be original, unique and truthful. In this chapter, we’ll discuss some best practices for optimising your product listings.

Optimising your product listings

Titles

  1. Your titles should be written in a smooth, readable way to attract buyers.
  2. Stick to product specifics only – keep it factual, but positive.
  3. Write for other humans, not search engines. This means no keyword-stuffing and avoiding long, confusing titles. Write with your ideal customer in mind.
  4. Use the most common name for an item (you can find this out by using Google Trends).
  5. Example title structures:
    1. Household items: [Brand] + [Product Name] + [Model number] + [Variants] + [Additional keywords]
    2. Simple titles: [Product] + [Item specifics] + [Key benefits]
    3. Apparel: [Brand] + [Department] + [Product Name] + [Size & Colour]
    4. Cookware: [Brand] + [Line] + [Size] + [Product Type]
    5. Gadgets: [Brand] + [Model number] + [Model Name] + [Product type] + [Colour]
    6. Small appliances: [Brand] + [Model number] + [Model Name] + [Product type] + [Colour]
  1. For variant listings, you can follow a simple title structure. Any variations should appear in your listing.

Listings

  1. Be careful what keywords you use and where you place them. You want keywords that have high search volume but low competition. You can place keywords in the product description, alt text and more.
  2. Replicate your title in your product description.
  3. Include all item specifications that Retailers might need to know and key features that benefit the buyer. Put these product benefits and keywords at the top.
  4. Break into short paragraphs and bullet points.
  5. Try to keep your product descriptions between 150-300 words. For everyday products (such as clothes or common household appliances) it’s best to keep your description brief and to the point. For more complex items (such as new electronics) you may need a longer, more comprehensive description.
  6. Avoid temporary statements such as “new” or “on sale now”, or subjective claims such as “best” or “amazing”.
  7. Do not use abusive or offensive terms.
  8. Avoid duplicate content, even if the content is your own.
  9. End with a clear call to action (CTA)

Images

  1. Use large and clear images that show the product in its entirety.
  2. Use multiple images to show off your product. On Dropshipzone, we recommend 8-10 pictures.
  3. Compress images where possible. This will reduce the file size and make the image easier to load, improving your page speed.
  4. Make your images mobile-friendly.
  5. Make sure your images follow the platform guidelines (see Chapter 2).

Platform guidelines

While Dropshipzone does not have specific guidelines for product listings, there are certain obligations that Suppliers must abide by.

Under Dropshipzone’s Supplier Service Level Agreement, Suppliers must provide product descriptions that match the product being sold. If a product does not match its description or a customer receives an incorrect product, Suppliers will be liable for a replacement or refund. Dropshipzone also reserves the right to exclude certain products from the platform, as outlined in our Product Category Eligibility Policy and our Banned Products Policy. Suppliers must also abide by Australian Consumer Law, which states that products must match their description, samples and demo models.
